The Operations Division Mission Statement:

To provide maintenance, operation, and transportation support services to the school system at a controlled costs in order to establish a positive learning environment responsive to the needs of the community, school board, superintendent, and administrators.


Division of District Operations Overview

The Operations Division of Dearborn Schools provides services to the school community by the following Departments:

Trades – 27 Skilled Trades provide new construction and maintenance of facilities, classrooms, and furnishings

Grounds – A full service Grounds Department provides grass cutting, snow plowing, landscaping, playground construction, and complete grounds and athletic field maintenance

Transportation – A staff of 110 Drivers, Attendants, and Mechanics provide transportation to over 4,000 students including field trips, special education, material movement, mail deliver, meal delivery and athletic transportation

Engineering – Licensed engineers operate building systems including state of the art heating, cooling, and pool filtration equipment

Custodial – Provide as clean, sanitary environment for the learning process as well as extra curricular activities in the facilities

Environmental and Safety – Full time staff personnel provide for a clean and safe learning and work environment consistent with codes, laws, and best available practices

Meet the Staff:

Jerry Uchtorff, Director of District Operations – Mr. Uchtorff joined Dearborn Schools with experience in a variety of industry facilities management positions in 1986 and has been the Director of District Operations. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University and has worked in the feld of facilities construction and maintenance for 32 years.

Jeff Burek, Supervisor of Plant Operations – Mr. Burek has a Bachelor Degree in Industrial Management, is a City of Dearborn licensed boiler operator, and has experience both as a custodian and building engineer within the Dearborn Public Schools

Jim Michalski, Supervisor of Architectural Trades – Journeyman carpenter and locksmith and licensed building contractor. Mr. Michalski holds an Associates and Bachelors degree and worked with the District as a tradesman in several trades

Dave Zanghi, Supervisor of Electrical/Mechanical Trades- Licensed refrigeration mechanic, Dave holds a Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education and has extensive experience in industrial systems and building maintenance

Don Ball, Safety/Security/Regulatory Compliance Specialist – Mr. Ball holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees and has extensive experience in industrial safety and security as well as environmental regulation

Steve Lynch, Supervisor of Transportation – Mr. Lynch has both an Associates and Bachelors Degree in Business with extensive experience in warehousing, material movement, and transportation

Mr. Curt Siegwald, Transportation Assistant – Mr. Siegwald has a Bachelors Degree in Urban Studies with experience in material handling and transportation operations.
